World Music Awards 2013: Eurovision artists among nominees

After a two-year break, the World Music Awards are back in 2013 to reward the world’s best-selling artists in the various categories and to the best-selling artists from each major territory. Since its creation in 1989 under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco, the event has celebrated many international artists including many former Eurovision participants. This year is no exception, quite a few Eurovision entrants are listed among the nominees.

Over the years, many Eurovision artists have been rewarded on several occasions by the World Music Awards. Among the lucky winners one can find Samira Saïd (MA 1980), Céline Dion (CH 1988), Lara Fabian (L 1988), Philip Kirkorov (RUS 1995), t.A.T.u (RUS 2003), Ruslana (UA 2004), Sakis Rouvas (GR 2004, 2009), Dima Bilan (RUS 2006, 2008), Serebro (RUS 2007), DJ BoBo (CH 2007) and Cascada (D 2013).

Sales figures are provided by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Nine Awards are voted online by the public. The Awards are gold-plated, each depicting an Artist holding the world, and are designed and manufactured by R.S. Owens & Co. who also make the Oscars. The awards show is broadcast to North and South America, all of Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Southeast Asia, all of China, India, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and all of Africa, reaching an estimated worldwide audience of one billion viewers in over 160 countries. The World Music Awards builds hospitals, schools and orphanages through the Monaco Aide et Presence Foundation and the Combonian Missionary Association which assist underdeveloped Areas in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Brazil.
