Burgas Airport has announced its full readiness to handle the significant increase in passenger traffic anticipated for the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. This declaration came during a recent meeting with mayors from Black Sea municipalities, where discussions focused on the city’s robust infrastructure for the upcoming international event.

Burgas Airport confirms capacity for Eurovision 2027

A recent meeting between the management of Burgas Airport and mayors from various Black Sea municipalities highlighted the airport’s preparedness for the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. Burgas has been officially confirmed as the host city for the 71st edition of the contest, following Bulgaria’s victory in 2026.

Officials from Burgas Airport affirmed that the existing infrastructure and operational capacity are more than sufficient to manage the substantial increase in air travel associated with an event of Eurovision’s scale. The airport is designed to handle peak demand, capable of processing approximately 50,000 passengers per day and up to 21 aircraft movements per hour.

This commitment from the airport is a crucial element for Burgas as it prepares to welcome thousands of fans, delegations, and media. The airport management, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, is actively engaging in discussions with airlines and partners to expand the route network, attract additional services, and increase flight frequencies specifically for 2027.

While the full Summer 2027 flight schedule is yet to be finalised, new routes and specific airline programmes are expected to be announced gradually. The airport’s consistent international connectivity, serving over 70 international destinations in 2026, further solidifies its position as a vital gateway for Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.

The selection of Burgas as the host city, over the capital Sofia, surprised many, including Bulgaria’s 2026 winner DARA. However, the city’s established tourism industry, a new arena (Arena Burgas) with a 15,000 concert capacity, and its coastal landscape were key factors in the decision.

BNT’s press release reads:

Burgas Airport is ready to handle the increased passenger traffic surrounding the hosting of Eurovision 2027. This was stated by the airport management during a meeting with mayors of the Black Sea municipalities and representatives of local administrations.

During the meeting, the airport’s capabilities and the investments made in the infrastructure were presented. These include the complete rehabilitation of the runway worth over 60 million euros, as well as the modernization and expansion of the terminal facilities and the airport’s capacity.

Burgas Airport says it has supported the city’s bid to host the song contest from the very beginning. After Burgas’ selection, efforts will also be focused on improving the region’s year-round air connectivity.

The meeting discussed cooperation between the airport, Black Sea municipalities, state institutions and airlines for the opening and maintenance of more year-round routes. The airport concessionaire also announced that since the establishment of the Burgas Airport Development Fund, they have provided 300,000 euros for its activities.
