Australian Pop Star and actress Jessica Mauboy has been named as the special guest performer during the second Semi Final in Copenhagen on 8 May.
She will perform a song especially written for the occasion, which will not only reflect her indigenous Australian heritage, but also the European countries competing in the contest. She says of the as yet untitled song, The song speaks of ancient dreaming but I also wanted to convey a message, that whatever country you represent, you have to bring that culture to the next generation.
Jessica Mauboy rose to fame in the TV talent show Australian Idol, coming in as runner up in the fourth series in 2006 and has since released three albums in Australia and starred in the successful film The Sapphires.
The Eurovision Song Contest has a huge following in Australia, and has been shown on channel SBS since 1974. Australian stars Olivia Newton-John and Gina G have both competed, and last year over 750,000 Australian fans watched the final. Australia also has a royal connection to Denmark, as the Danish Crown Princess Mary was born and grew up in Australia.
Australian fans will be able to watch Jessica’s journey to performing at Eurovision in the documentary Jessica Mauboy’s Road to Eurovision which will shown on SBS before the coverage of the Second Semi Final on 10 May.
