Following Bulgaria’s triumphant victory at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 with Dara and her song ‘Bangaranga’, attention now turns to the host city for the 2027 edition. Sofia’s Mayor, Vasil Terziev, has expressed strong confidence in the capital’s readiness and capabilities to stage the international music event.
Sofia’s Bid for Eurovision 2027
Mayor Vasil Terziev has officially declared Sofia as Bulgaria’s most prepared city to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027. This announcement comes after Bulgaria’s historic win at Eurovision 2026 in Vienna. Terziev conveyed his immense satisfaction regarding Dara’s triumph and reiterated Sofia’s commitment to submitting a strong bid to host the prestigious contest.
During an interview on Nova Television, Mayor Terziev highlighted Sofia’s robust infrastructure, excellent international connections, and ample accommodation facilities as key advantages. He confidently stated that the capital possesses all the necessary attributes to stage such a large-scale international spectacle.
Mayor Terziev says:
The list of things we need to do is extremely long. From preparing the hall, to the settlement where journalists and teams will be, to preparation at the city level in general, so that we can welcome so many visitors from all over the world.
Arena Sofia: A Potential Venue
The primary candidate venue for Eurovision 2027 in Sofia is the Arena Sofia, formerly known as Arena Armeec. This multi-purpose indoor arena boasts a concert capacity of up to 17,906 people. Notably, the venue has prior experience with a major Eurovision event, having successfully hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2015, demonstrating its capability to manage large-scale productions.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) sets specific requirements for host cities, including a venue available for approximately eight weeks with a minimum capacity of 10,000 attendees, alongside robust logistical and infrastructural support. Sofia’s bid aims to meet these criteria comprehensively, positioning the capital as a frontrunner among Bulgarian cities.
Other Bulgarian Cities Express Interest
While Sofia emerges as a strong contender, other Bulgarian cities have also expressed interest in hosting Eurovision 2027. Burgas, with its Arena Burgas (capacity up to 15,000), Plovdiv, and Varna have also put their names forward to host the contest.
The Bulgarian National Television (BNT), as the host broadcaster, alongside the Bulgarian government, has already commenced initial meetings and discussions regarding the immense task of hosting Eurovision 2027.
In celebration of Dara’s victory, the Sofia Municipality and BNT are inviting residents and guests to a grand DARA PARTY on Knyaz Alexander Square, reflecting the national excitement surrounding Bulgaria’s upcoming role as Eurovision host.
