Russia: Pop stars get a makeover

Recognise the man in the photo? Probably not, as the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest winner, Russian pop idol Dima Bilan, is usually pictured wearing far less and in a…. slightly different style. This time he can be seen portrayed as Hans Holbein the Younger's 16th-century French ambassador by photographer Ekaterina Rozhdestvenskaya.

In Rozhdestvenskaya's new exhibit, running currently at the Manezh Exhibition Hall, one hundred and sixty six celebrities are given a brand new, sophisticated look. Among them, Dima Bilan who is portrayed as Hans Holbein the Younger's 16th-century French ambassador and Alla Pugacheva's daughter, Kristina Orbakaite, becomes a chaste 15th-century maiden in Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine.

"There was no philosophical aim with these photos. I intended for them to be appreciated not just by the intelligentsia but by a mass audience," Rozhdestvenskaya says. It is also said that Dima had been hoping to become part of the project, which started 9 years ago, for four years but only made it after his Eurovision victory.

Thanks to Johnny Logan and Hold me now I fell in love with the Eurovision Song Contest, a love that's been going strong ever since with undiminished passion. My first memories date back to 1977 and the lyrics of Rock bottom, Dschinghis Khan and A ba ni bi are still engraved in my brain.

I joined esctoday.com in 2006 as a junior editor after being invited by Barry Viniker, I soon became Senior Editor and during the 2007 contest in Helsinki I was appointed Head of Communications. Today I hold the post of Head of Human Resources and I am proud to be working with the best editorial team in the world.
