Emma Marrone, who represented Italy at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen with La mia cittá, has been nominated for an MTV award in her home country.
The MTV Awards 2014 encourage intense social media participation amongst supporters of both local and international stars, with Twitter and Facebook buzz a big factor.
Emma Marrone is competing for votes in a first-round duel against American pop sensation Selena Gomez. Fans are requested to watch videos of the artists before voting and fans are also limited to ten votes per day.
Marco Mengoni, who achieved a seventh place finish for Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with his song L’essenziale, triumphed over Justin Timberlake by a huge margin in the last duel.
