Luxembourg is set to significantly increase its financial commitment to the Eurovision Song Contest, with the government allocating €2 million per year for its participation in 2028, 2028, and 2029. This budget adjustment aims to meet evolving production standards and strengthen the country’s Eurovision presence.
Luxembourg’s commitment to entering the Eurovision Song Contest for a further three years will come at an increased cost, with the government set to raise its annual budget to €2 million for the years 2027, 2028, and 2029.
The Ministry of Media and Connectivity confirmed this budget increase to the Luxemburger Wort. Previously, the state budget had allocated €1.6 million for the contest, although actual costs had already reached €1,667,532 by 2025.
Both the ministry and RTL, the public broadcaster overseeing Luxembourg’s participation, have stated that the need to meet higher quality and production standards justifies the use of additional taxpayers’ money for the event.
“The annual budget allocated for this purpose has been adjusted to €2 million to further strengthen the Eurovision ecosystem, which is now firmly established in the country, and to enable broader participation by national partners,” the ministry’s press team explained.
The ministry also clarified that RTL is not making any profit from its commitment, stating:
“The funding is structured in such a way that it is economically neutral for CLT-UFA [the parent company of RTL Luxembourg].”
RTL’s Eurovision Luxembourg team indicated that the higher costs are linked to “increased requirements” associated with organising the Luxembourg Song Contest (LSC), the national selection show for the Grand Duchy’s representative, and participating in the Eurovision Song Contest itself.
Elisabeth Conter ( Head of Delegation for Luxembourg at Eurovision) says:
In recent years, production requirements, technical implementation, and expectations regarding the quality of the events have increased significantly. Added to this are higher costs for stage production, international promotion, travel, accommodation, and delegation support .
Elisabeth Conter adds:
With the adjusted budget, RTL can continue to realize the LSC and Luxembourg’s participation in the ESC at a level that meets the international standards of the competition.
Conter concludes:
We can also state that the organization and production of the Luxembourg Song Contest at the Rockhal represents the largest cost block, accounting for around 70 percent of the total budget. The remaining funds are allocated to the preparation and execution of Luxembourg’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Luxembourg has confirmed its participation at the Eurovision Song Contest for 2027, 2028 and 2029. Preparations have already kicked off in the Grand Duchy for the Luxembourg Song Contest 2027.
