Belgian Flemish broadcaster VRT has reportedly received an extension from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) regarding its participation in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2027. This development comes amidst ongoing discussions within the broadcaster about its involvement, particularly concerning the EBU’s decision-making processes and the participation of certain countries.
VRT considers Eurovision 2027 participation amidst ongoing concerns
Reports from Belgian media indicate that VRT, the public broadcaster for the Flemish region of Belgium, has been granted additional time by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to confirm its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. The official deadline for broadcasters to confirm their participation concludes today September 15th, making this extension significant.
VRT is currently engaged in internal discussions regarding its potential involvement, having previously expressed concerns about the EBU’s overall approach, including issues surrounding the voting system and the participation of Israel. The broadcaster has called for greater clarity and transparency in the EBU’s decision-making processes, advocating for direct member voting on all decisions.
Belgium traditionally alternates its Eurovision participation between its two public broadcasters: VRT for the Flemish community and RTBF for the Walloon (French-speaking) community. VRT is scheduled to be responsible for Belgium’s entry in 2027. While RTBF has categorically denied rumours of taking over Belgium’s participation if VRT withdraws, the situation remains fluid.
The extension allows VRT more time to evaluate the EBU’s responses to its concerns before making a final decision on whether Belgium will take to the stage in Eurovision 2027.
Hence Belgium is the second country which has been granted an extension to confirm its participation at ESC 2027 along with the Netherlands.
