The Netherlands: Romy Monteiro added to Eurovision 2018 candidate list?

In addition to stars such as Alain Clark and Caro Emerald, upcoming artist Romy Monteiro may be considered as a potential Dutch Eurovision 2018 candidate according to recent reports. Moreover, the young singer is actually added to the list of ESC ’18 potentials by Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS.

Romy Monteiro was put on AVROTROS’ list of Eurovision potentials, after SBS Shownieuws spoke to Daniël Dekker about Eurovision 2018.

Daniël Dekker is Radio DJ, former Dutch Eurovision commentator, official AVROTROS Eurovision spokesperson and he is closely involved with the broadcasters’ Eurovision selection commission. When Shownieuws suggested the talented singer Romy Monteiro, he promptly said she would be added to the list of ESC potentials.

Furthermore, Daniël Dekker said that AVROTROS is still celebrating OG3NE‘s 11th place in the Grand Final of Eurovision 2017 and that they will evaluate the ESC ’17 in the coming months, considering several artists they have put on the list for Eurovision 2018. He called Romy Monteiro one of the biggest talents of the moment, who would surely be suited for the international stage.

Romy Monteiro is no stranger to AVROTROS, nor to the world of Eurovision, as she has recently signed a contract with the broadcaster, presenting the children’s programme Mijn Vader Is De Beste (“My Father Is The Best“), and she will host the national Dutch selection for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 this autumn.

Romy Monteiro has meanwhile stated on radio station 100% NL that she would absolutely say “yes” if AVROTROS asked her to participate in Eurovision 2018 in Portugal.

Who is Romy Monteiro?

Romy Monteiro (Utrecht, the Netherlands, 1992) is a Dutch singer, musical actress and television host. She is the daughter of Dutch singer Antje Monteiro (common name Antje Truggelaar), who comes from the community of travellers, and Romy has a Portuguese-Angolan father.

Romy Monteiro had her public breakthrough when she participated in the popular TV-show The Voice Of Holland in 2014. Noticed for her powerful voice, she was coached by singer Trijntje Oosterhuis (Eurovision 2015) and made it to the quarter finals. The 2014 edition of The Voice was eventually won by girl group OG3NE (Eurovision 2017).

Following The Voice, Romy Monteiro was cast as lead actress and singer in the musical The Bodyguard, which became a huge success throughout the Netherlands, and for which she won the Dutch Musical Award for Upcoming Talent.

In January 2017, Romy Monteiro released the album A tribute o Whitney, on which she covers several great hits of her idol Whitney Houston. The album landed on the number 1 spot in the Dutch Album Top 100.
