The first semi-final of Söngvakeppnin 2017 has just concluded, and Iceland have chosen the first three acts who will participate in the final on 11 March.

Tonight saw the first 6 acts performing their entries live to the public for the first time. The entries were performed in Icelandic in tonight’s show, with tonight’s qualifiers being given the opportunity to perform in a language of their choice in the final of the selection.

The qualifiers

The qualifiers were determined by 100% televote, and are:

  • Aron Hannes EmilssonNótt
  • Arnar Jónsson & Rakel PálsdóttirTil mín

This means that we say goodbye to Hildur, Júlí Heiðar Halldórsson & Þórdís Birna Borgarsdóttir and Erna Mist Pétursdóttir.

Next week, 6 more acts will compete in the second semi-final of Söngvakeppnin, where another 3 participants will qualify to the grand final. Six acts in total will compete in the final.

Eleanor (or Ellie), is 26 years old, is from Exeter in the UK. She combines motherhood with studying linguistics. Ellie was first allowed to stay up and watch the Eurovision Song Contest aged 5 in 1999, but really fell in love with it after the Athens 2006 contest. Big key changes and dramatic stage shows are an absolute must! Ellie has also written an A* academic dissertation on the cultural history of Eurovision.
