VRT, the national Belgian Flemish speaking broadcaster, has confirmed to ESCToday that Belgium will participate at the forthcoming 2020 Eurovision Song Contest in the Netherlands next year.

Thus Belgium joins Norway, Germany, San Marino, Czech Republic and Denmark all whom have confirmed their participation at the 2020 Eurovision edition in the Netherlands.

2020 will be VRT’s turn to go to Eurovision as in Belgium two national broadcasters participate in the competition alternatively (RTBF and VRT).

VRT is yet to unveil its plan of action for Eurovision 2020 and the format it will use to select its Eurovision entry and act for next year’s Eurovision edition. It is more than likely that the broadcaster will opt for an internal selection as has been the case in recent years.

Last time VRT participated in Eurovision, the broadcaster selected SENNEK to defend the Belgian colours at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon.

Belgium in Eurovision

Belgium debuted at the Eurovision in 1956 and is one of the founder members of our beloved contest. The country has won the competition once, namely in 1986 when Sandra Kim was crowned the winnner in Bergen with her epic entry  J’aime la vie.

In 2019 Belgium selected Eliot via an internal selection to fly the Belgian flag at the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv with his entry Wake up. Despite a great performance he failed to qualify to the Grand Final in Israel.
