Musical life of Lawson

Célia Maria Fernandes Lawson (Angola, Portuguese West-Africa, 1974) started singing from age 15, joining various hardrock- and cover bands. She became known to the wider public when she was a finalist in the show Chuva de Estrelas (Rain of Stars) in 1996.

She won the Festival da Canção in 1997, representing Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin, Ireland. With her entry Antes do adeus (Before the goodbye, written and composed by Thilo Krassmann and Rosa Lobato de Faria), she received the infamous zero points, sharing the last place with Norway’s Tor Endresen, both getting 0 points.

Célia Lawson moved to the United Kingdom and returned to the music scene in the 2000’s, performing rock music under the name IRA.
