More than 1000 songs were submitted for MGP 2016, but only ten will make it to the selection. The ten finalists will be announced in January.

In 2014, the Norwegians have decided to abandon the format of three semifinals in MGP that has been used since 2006, in favour of a traditional one-night selection. Traditionally, the winner is expected to be chosen by two rounds of televoting, with the top songs of the first round qualifies to a superfinal.
