With a combined age of just 32 years, Anita Simoncini and Michele Perniola make up the youngest duet in the entire 60 year history of the Eurovision Song Contest. And this is not their first Eurovision experience, either: both Anita and Michele have represented San Marino at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
As a member of all girl band The Peppermints, Anita finished in 15th place at the Malta hosted Junior Eurovision Song Contest of 2014 with the song Breaking My Heart. Michele Perniola’s younger sister Raffaella “Raffy” was also a member of the band.
Born in Palagiano, Italy, in September 1998, Michele, who rose to prominence after winning RAI TV talent show Ti Lascio Una Canzone in 2012 with 43% of the total vote, was chosen by SMRTV to represent San Marino at their Junior Eurovision debut in 2013, where his entry O-o-o Sole intorno a me accomplished a 10th placing.
Anita was born in Montegiardino, San Marino, in 1999. Anita, whose astrological sign is Aries, is passionate about ballet, contemporary dance and counts Coldplay and Radiohead as two of her favourite bands. She describes her Junior Eurovision experience as one of the best times of her life.
As a result of his young age, Michele was given special dispensation by the European Broadcasting Union to read the San Marinese points at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final. During his time as a contestant on Ti Lascio Una Canzone, Michele was labelled as ‘The Italian Michael Jackson’, as he performed a number of the late superstar’s songs on the show. Michele also duetted with Italian music legends and former Eurovision participants Al Bano (who represented Italy in 1976 and 1986) and Raf (1989), and toured the United States together with other contestants from the talent show.
Anita and Michele present Chain of lights as a song of hope and international understanding. They are looking forward to the challenge in Vienna where they will reach their biggest audience yet – the stage is well and truly set for our young artists from San Marino!
