Cyprus: Michalis Hatzigiannis takes Australia by storm

Michalis Hatzigiannis is on tour in Australia, and is taking the country by storm.

Last Saturday, Michalis performed a sell-out gig at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl as part of this year’s Melbourne Festival. He was accompanied by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and sang tracks from his recent albums as well as timeless Greek classics. He is set to take to the stage again this coming Saturday (25 October) at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre. Tickets for the event are available here.

I’m very proud to have been invited to this festival, Michalis told Brisbane Times ahead of last week’s performance in Melbourne.He also told the paper of his strong connections to Australia, and in particular to Melbourne. He performed in the country first back in 2004, and has returned four times. And during his trips to Australia, Michalis has formed a deep friendship with Masterchef Australia judge, George Calombaris.

He’s from Cyrpus, I’m from Cyprus, Michalis explains. He’s a great cook. You can tell a lot about a man from the way he makes food.

Michalis Hatzigiannis represented Cyprus at the Eurovision Song Contest 1998. He finished in 11th place with his song, Genesis. Since then, he has released 10 albums and even performed at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games when it was held in Athens in 2004.
