RÚV, the Icelandic national broadcaster, is currently deliberating its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. A significant hurdle has emerged as a majority of the broadcaster’s board members have expressed their reluctance to compete unless Israel is excluded from the contest. This stance casts a shadow of doubt over Iceland’s presence in the upcoming competition.
A majority of the RÚV board has called for Iceland’s Eurovision boycott to continue in 2027 if Israel participates. At a meeting on 30th September, six of the nine board members submitted a statement asking RÚV’s director to inform the EBU of their position. They also reiterated their earlier call for Israel to be excluded from the contest. This decision follows Iceland’s boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, alongside Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia, due to Israel’s participation.
Board member Diljá Ámundadóttir Zoëga shared the statement on Facebook following the meeting, as reported by RÚV. The RÚV board had previously called on the EBU to exclude Israel in a resolution adopted in November 2025. Board chairman Stefán Jón Hafstein stated that the resolution still stands, as the EBU has not addressed its substance.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has indicated that broadcasters generally have until after October to announce their participation for Eurovision 2027, with the deadline to withdraw without financial penalty typically being mid-October. RÚV is yet to make a final public announcement regarding its decision for Eurovision 2027. A number of countries have been granted an extension to finalise their respective decisions regarding Eurovision 2027.
The contest is set to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, with the Grand Final scheduled for 15th May 2027.
