Iceland’s national broadcaster, RÚV, is yet to make a definitive decision regarding the country’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. The topic has seen very little discussion among the RÚV board members, with their next meeting scheduled for late September.
Uncertainty surrounds Iceland’s Eurovision 2027 plans
As the deadline for preliminary participation approaches, the Icelandic national broadcaster RÚV has confirmed that a decision on whether Iceland will compete in Eurovision 2027 has not yet been made. According to Stefán Jón Hafstein, Chairman of the RÚV board, discussions regarding Eurovision have been minimal within the board.
Stefan Jon Hafstein says:
My understanding is that no date has been set for when the final deadline is for notifying [them] of participation.
The next RÚV board meeting is set to take place at the end of September. However, it remains uncertain if Iceland’s potential involvement in the 2027 contest will be on the agenda, as the full agenda has not yet been finalised.
The Chairman RUV’s Board of Directors points out that the board’s resolution from November still stands. At a meeting held then, the board approved a resolution recommending to the EBU that Israel be excluded from the competition.
Netherlands’ potential non-participation also noted
The RÚV article also highlights that the Netherlands is unlikely to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest for the second consecutive year. Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS recently announced its intention not to take part in Eurovision 2027, citing concerns that the event can no longer be considered neutral amidst ongoing international conflicts. The responsibility for the Netherlands’ participation has now been passed to their umbrella public broadcaster, NPO, who will make the final decision.
Iceland was among five countries, including the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia, that boycotted the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 due to the controversy surrounding Israel’s participation. RÚV had previously stated in December 2025 that it would closely follow developments at the 2026 contest before deciding on its 2027 participation.
