It is with deep sadness that ESCToday reports the passing of Vlado Janevski, the acclaimed singer who represented North Macedonia at the Eurovision Song Contest 1998. Janevski passed away on 28 June 2026 at the age of 65, leaving behind a significant legacy in Macedonian music.
Vlado Janevski, born Vladimir Janevski on 27 November 1960 in Skopje, was a prominent figure in the Macedonian music scene for decades. He made history as the very first representative for North Macedonia (then known as FYR Macedonia) at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998.
In Birmingham, United Kingdom, Janevski performed his self-penned melancholic ballad, ‘Ne Zori, Zoro’. This entry holds a special place in Eurovision history as it was the last song ever to be accompanied by a live orchestra at the contest, marking the end of an era. He finished 19th with 16 points, but his performance laid the groundwork for future Macedonian participation.
Throughout his career, Janevski released numerous albums and was celebrated for blending traditional Macedonian elements with contemporary pop. His artistry, marked by profound emotion and a deep love for the Macedonian language, touched the hearts of generations. He was also known for his fluency in multiple languages and his involvement in several popular Macedonian bands before his solo career took off.
Vlado Janevski’s passing was widely reported by Macedonian media on 28 June 2026, with tributes pouring in from across the country. His contributions to music and his pioneering role at Eurovision ensure his lasting memory in the cultural heritage of North Macedonia.
The ESCToday Team would like to convey our deepest condelences and sympathies to Vlad’s family and friends in these distressful times. RIP.
