Latvia kicks off its search for its 2018 Eurovision act and entry tonight with Supernova’s first semi-final.

Tonight sees the first Supernova 2018 show kick off the Latvian search for its 2018 Eurovision hopeful. LTV, the Latvian national broadcaster is all set to bring back the coveted Eurovision trophy back on Latvian soil for the second time.

The 2018 Latvian national selection Supernova will consist of four televised shows (3 semi-finals and the grand finale), with 21 acts battling for the golden ticket to Lisbon. Supernova 2018 will be hosted Dagmāra Legante and Justs Sirmais (Latvia 2016).

LTV the Latvian national broadcaster has opted to select its Eurovision hopeful via Supernova for the fourth consecutive year.

About the show

A total of 21 acts will compete in the 2018 Latvian national selection; 7 in each of semi-final. Only 2 candidates from each semi-final will proceed to Supernova’s Grand Final.  Hence a total of 6 acts will battle in the grand finale, in their quest to fly the Latvian flag at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon.

Tonight’s show will see the first seven acts battling for the golden ticket to Supernova’s Grand Final, scheduled to be held on 24 February. Only 2 candidates will proceed to the Grand Finale after a public/jury deliberation.

Latvia in Eurovision

Latvia debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2000 with Brainstorm and has won the competition once in 2002 with Marie N. The country successfully hosted the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest in Riga.

In 2017, Triana Park defended the Latvian colours at the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv with their entry Line. Despite an energetic performance, the group did not qualify to the Grand Final.
