As the most countries have already started their race in order to find their representative for Lisbon, the national broadcaster Latvijas Televīzija (LTV) is about to close their song submission process on 15 October at 23:59 local time. Following this process, a jury of music experts appointed by the broadcaster will evaluate the submitted entries and pick the best ones to participate in the televised live shows of Supernova 2018.

New people entering the Supernova project

2018 sees the absence of the jury manager over the last few years. As reported, Kaspars Roga is about to start a concert tour in the Far East with his band Brainstorm. About Roga, the producer of the Supernova show Ilze Jansone states:

Kaspars is not only the leader of the jury, but one of the co-authors of the format, one of those people who was passionate about the Supenova idea from the very beginning and during the selection process he has always been “fighting” in groups and by hand. We certainly expect Kaspars in one of the “Supernova” live shows and hold his thumbs on his paths in the Far East.

The new jury leader is going to be the music editor DJ Rudd, as the rest of the panel will also be renewed. About his appointment in the show, he stated:

I see the fourth season as the beginning of a new phase. Three years are enough time to objectively evaluate the achievements and mistakes of the past. I’m looking forward to listening to the submitted songs and discovering good compositions and able performers.

On 5 November, the applicants are going to stand in front of the Supernova jury, which will be formed by both Latvian and international music professionals. Following that meeting, the jury will have to select the most appropriate singers and songs for the show.

Supernova 2018 will consist of three semi-finals and a final, as the viewers and jury will each have a 50% stake at the outcome. The winner of the show will earn the Latvian ticket to the 63rd Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon next May.

LTV joins forces with Universal Music

The Latvian broadcaster will once again cooperate with the record label Universal Music Group to help promote the Supernova winner within and outside Latvia. As previously reported, their 2018 target is to discover a promising artist who will meet the prerequisites for a successful career beyond the Latvian borders.

In 2017, the Supernova winners were the band Triana Park, who represented Latvia in Kyiv. Despite an extraordinary performance of their entry Line, they didn’t manage to proceed to the Grand Final, coming last in the first semi-final with 21 points.

Could the new Supernova winner reverse the recent poor Eurovision result of Latvia?
