Who will represent Estonia at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm? The Baltic country’s national selection process Eesti Laul continues tonight with a hotly contested second semi-final…

Last week’s first semi-final saw Mick Pedaja, Laura, Kati Laev & Noorkuu, Cartoon feat. Kristel Aaslaid and Kéa qualify to the Grand Final of the competition, to be held at Tallinn’s Saku Suurhall (the venue which hosted the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest) on Saturday 5 March. Five more Grand Final places are to be decided, with tonight’s participants as follows, in order of appearance:

  1. Go Away Bird – Sally
  2. Jüri Pootsmann – Play
  3. Meisterjaan – Parmupillihullus
  4. I Wear* Experiment – Patience
  5. Púr Múdd – Meet halfway
  6. Grete Paia – Stories untold
  7. Põhja-Tallinn & Jaagup Kreem – Eiolemulolla
  8. Anett Kulbin – Strong
  9. Gertu Pabbo – Miljon korda
  10. La La Ladies – Unikaalne

Two of Estonia’s most recent Eurovision Song Contest representatives return to Eesti Laul as songwriters: Stig Rästa (2015, Goodbye to yesterday with Elina Born) is a pivotal figure behind Jüri Pootsmann’s Play while Tanja (2014, Amazing) is strongly associated with the La La Ladies.

An ERR (Eesti Rahvusringhääling) production, tonight’s Eesti Laul performances were pre-recorded at an earlier date. The remaining portion of the show, including the results, is live and broadcast from the Estonia Theatre in Tallinn. The five qualifiers will be decided using a 50/50 combination of public televote and Jury (featuring a selection of music industry professionals) vote.

Husband and wife duo Henry and Maris Kõrvits will again host the show. Audience participation is encouraged via Twitter using the hashtag “#EestiLaul2016”.
