The Danish broadcaster DR will host the first Euro Melodi Grand Prix, the junior version of the Eurovision Song Contest. DR already has experience with their own children song contest. 15 countries showed interest according unofficial sources.

Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Austria and Switzerland are said to be interested to participate in the contest.

The maximum age to participate in the contest will be 15 years. The first EMGP will be held somewhere in 2003. Although an official date has not been set yet, it is expected the contest will be held around September, when kids are usually at the end of their summer holiday and preparations won't be during school period.

The format of the contest will probably be the same as the format of the Eurovision Song Contest. Critics doubt on the fact if the contest will be just as popular as the grown up version, because the new youth contest has not such a strong tradition as the Eurovision Song Contest.
