Netherlands: a single artist again

Just like this year, Dutch broadcaster NOS will invite one artist to be the Dutch participant in next year's Eurovision Song Contest. NOS managing director Gerard Dielessen told this to Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf.

This year, Edsilia Rombley was invited to be the Dutch participant in Helsinki. The NOS gave her carte blanche in selecting the song she wanted to sing. Edsilia and her management chose the song Nooit meer zonder jou, which eventually was changed into On top of the world. Edsilia presented her song to the Dutch audience on February 11th in the television show Mooi! Weer de Leeuw.

For 2008, the NOS will use the same formula. The NOS will invite one artist, who will get a free choice in the song he, she or they want to sing. It is unknown yet if the song will be presented again in Mooi! Weer de Leeuw.

Gerard Dielessen said that the NOShopes to announce the name of the artist in question within a few weeks. The NOS waited for the changes in the Eurovision Song Contest formula before they started to look for an artist. Now that the chances to qualify for the final have increased, it might be easier for the NOS to find an artist that is interested inparticipating.

Dielessen said furthermore that he had hoped that the big four-rule would have been abolished by the EBU, "but that is probably unfeasible from a financial point of view. These four countries pay for the lion's share of costs of the Eurovision Song Contest".

Thisyear, the Netherlands finished 21st in the semi final in Helsinki. A disappointing result which led to a lot of criticism about the Eurovision Song Contest format in the Netherlands.
