Belgium will participate in the first semi-final at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen on the 6 May.

Belgium’s Eurovision Song Contest history

Belgium debuted at the very first Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956 with 2 entries; Messieurs les noyés de la Seine performed by the late Fud Leclerc and Le plus beau jour de ma vie performed by Mony Marc. It is unknown where the Belgian participants placed as only the winner of the 1956 contest was revealed on the night.

Belgium’s best result was in 1986 when Sandra Kim was selected to represent her country with the song J’aime la vie. Sandra ended in 1st place with a total of 176 points giving Belgium their first and only win to date. Sandra’s participation and win caused controversy after the contest due to the revelation of Sandra’s age as she was only 13 at the time.

Last year, Roberto Bellarosa was internally selected to represent Belgium at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. A special radio show named A vous de choisir la chanson! was held to decide which song Roberto would perform at the contest and after a deliberation, the public and jury decided that the song Love kills would represent their country. At the contest, Roberto qualified from the grand final where he ended in 12th place with a total of 71 points.
