2008 saw the return of another Eurovision legend. Yes the ice princess of Scandipop was back with a song that had all the hallmarks of a potential winner. Hero was composed by Fredrik Kempe and yes you guessed it the bountiful Bobby Ljunggren. Now carrying the moniker of Charlotte Perrelli the former 1999 winner went to Belgrade with an anthem of gargantuan proportions. The wind was utilised to full effect yet strategically propelled to avoid La Perrelli’s forehead for obvious reasons. Yes people were scared, yes people were thrilled, yes she managed to chill the veins of many but even more disturbingly this beautiful song struggled to make it through the semi finals just making it through on a jury selection vote, finally settling for 18th place at the grand final. Many argue she was the victim of ‘block voting’ which was part of a sequence of events that led to the EBU finally addressing this issue in changing who votes for who at the semi’s.
