As we close the decade the 1988 contest gave birth to one of Eurovision’s greatest achievements, Celine Dion. As a toothy, permed hair, cream puff ball skirt wearing young chanteuse she managed to bring victory to Switzerland for only the second time since the contest’s inception back in the 50’s. The voting was thrilling as she managed to win it with only one point ahead of the UK. Her winning song Ne partez pas sans moi may not be remembered as one of her great classics but the lady herself has gone on to become one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. She currently headlines at Las Vegas and also recorded the iconic theme song to the motion picture Titanic, My heart will go on. She ranks alongside ABBA as one of the greatest exports from the Eurovision Song Contest.

As we close the decade of material excess on a high with Celine Dion, stay tuned to esctoday.com as we look forward the 90’s; a decade which would prove to make or break the contest and set a precedent for the future of the Eurovision Song Contest itself.
