Our beloved first Eurovision Song Contest winner, Lys Assia, has been reported to be in intensive care in a private hospital in Zurich after suffering from pneumonia. Reports says that she has been put under artificial ventilation.

She told the Swiss press on Sunday that she thought she might passed away and since then her condition has severely deteriorated.

Lys Assia, 89, has had serious health problems in recent years including a stroke in 2010 which resulted in her living with a heart simulator. 17 years ago she also received a 7 hour long heart surgery. Most recently, in 2011 she was admitted in hospital for stress related health issues.

Lys Assia was the very first winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, in 1956, 58 years ago with her song Refrain. She has since then been around the Eurovision Song Contest and attended several editions and was scheduled to attend the 2013 Contest. She also tried to represent Switzerland for the fourth time, last year in Baku with her song C’était ma vie , written by Jean-Paul Cara and Ralph Siegel and again this year with All in your head.

All Eurovision fans join us in wishing Lys Assia a speedy recovery.

I remember watching my first Eurovision Song Contest in 1988, aged 7. I have been a true fan since then.
