Croatiaand the Eurovision Song Contest
Although Croatia only began entering the Eurovision Song Contest as an independent country in 1993, theregion had a long tradition of participatingfor old Yugoslavia, and was responsible for theformer country's only win in 1989, with Riva's Rock me. As an independent nation, Croatia has the strongest record ofthe Balkan countries, in fact the only one in the region to have made the top five of a contest – three times in all.

This year, the traditional Dora contest was held by broadcaster HRT to decide therepresentative for Croatia. The event consisted as in former years of two semifinals leading to a grand final, the result decided by 50% jury and 50% televoting. As ever a well produced and lavish affair, Severina won through by just five pointsto represent her country with Moja štikla (Mystiletto heel).

Severina
Severina was born in 1972 and grew up in a town with a great tradition of musical festivals: Split. Severina enjoyed a great deal of success at music competitions and in theatre throughout her youth, andfromthe 1990son, released a clutch of successful albums which grounded her firmly as a stalwart performer of Croatian pop music. In 2003 she returned to her theatrical roots in a production of Karolina Riječka at the Croatian National Theatre of Rijeka.
