CyBC, the Cypriot national broadcaster has informed and confirmed to esctoday.com that Despina Olympiou has been selected to represent Cyprus at the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo via an internal selection.
The Cypriot broadcaster has revelead to esctoday.com that 2013 Cypriot Eurovision entry will be officially presented in mid February. The song will be performed in Greek and has been composed by Andreas Giorgallis and penned by Xenon Zindilis.
Despina Olympiou (also known as Dena Olympiou) enjoys fame and recognition both in Cyprus and Greece. She started her career in 1992 singing traditional songs from Greece and Cyprus. She also collaborated and did backing vocals with major singers in the Greek music industry like Haris Alexiou, Pantelis Thalassinos and Michalis Hadjiyannis.
Cyprus debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with the group Island and is yet to win the contest. The Mediterranean island’s best placing at the Eurovision Song Contest has been a 5th placing in 1982, 1997 and 2004.
