Estonian public broadcaster ERR has officially confirmed the regulations for Eesti Laul 2027, their highly anticipated national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, and has now opened the submission window. Significant changes have been introduced for the upcoming edition, aiming to align the competition closer to Eurovision requirements.
Eesti Laul 2027 song submissions are now open
The journey for Estonia’s next Eurovision representative officially commenced today as Estonian public broadcaster ERR opened the song submission window for Eesti Laul 2027. The regulations for the national selection were officially approved by the Board of Eesti Rahvusringhääling on 1 September 2026.
Artists and songwriters eager to represent Estonia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 can submit their entries from 4 September until 8 October 2026, at 12:00 noon (Estonian time).
Several notable changes have been implemented for Eesti Laul 2027, as outlined by producer Riin Vann. One significant update is the minimum age requirement for participating artists, which has been raised to 18 years old. This decision aims to align Estonia’s national selection with the age requirements of the Eurovision Song Contest, ensuring participants are better equipped to handle the demands of the competition.
Another crucial change affects the winner of Eesti Laul. The winning artist will now be required to formally confirm their readiness to represent Estonia at Eurovision. Should the winner be unable or unwilling to participate, the opportunity will be extended to the next highest-ranked entry. Karmel Killandi, ERR’s Head of Entertainment Programs, highlighted that the Eurovision journey demands intense preparation and commitment, and this rule allows artists to fully consider the significant impact on their lives.
The Grand Final of Eesti Laul 2027 is scheduled to take place on 30 January 2027, at Unibet Arena. A total of 12 songs will compete in the final, selected by a jury of at least 25 members. The ultimate winner will be decided in a superfinal round through public voting.
Furthermore, submitted songs must not have been publicly released before 27 November 2026, at 21:00 (EST). Riin Vann also advised participants to consider the vocal and stage aspects of their performance from the outset, even though the preliminary jury judges entries blindly, as the Eurovision stage demands a comprehensive and captivating show.
Rinn Vann (Eesti Laul Producer) says:
The first clarification is based on the Eurovision rules, which state that a participant in the song contest must be at least 18 years old. The world has become more sensitive about certain topics, and when it comes to adults, the gray areas are a little easier to deal with.
Rinn Vann adds:
We want the participants to be sure from the beginning and know what awaits them. Winning the Eesti Laul is one stage, but what happens from there? After winning Eesti Laul, they must confirm to us that they are ready to represent Estonia at Eurovision. If an artist cannot or does not want to do this for some reason, we have the right to offer this opportunity to the next participant in the ranking.
Rinn Vann concludes:
An artist’s life changes drastically after winning the Estonian Song Contest. For four months, they have to put all their plans in order. This means a lot of interviews, changing the stage concept for the big Eurovision stage, putting together a team and, let’s be honest, it also means financial investments, which is a very big responsibility. We want the participants to be aware of this from the beginning.
