VRT, the Flemish speaking Belgian national broadcaster, has confirmed that Belgium will compete at the fortchoming 2027 Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria.
Belgium, thus joins the list of countries who have so far confirmed their participation at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria next year.
VRT’s official press release reads:
Wednesday, September 23, 2026 – VRT informed organizer EBU (European Broadcasting Union) today that it will send a participant to the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 in Bulgaria. By doing so, the public broadcaster aims to give the movement within the EBU an opportunity to restore the original values of the Song Contest, such as connection, mutual understanding, and a desire for peace.
Over the past few months, VRT, together with other public broadcasters, including NPO in the Netherlands, has asked important questions about the future of the Eurovision Song Contest. Today, VRT notes that the EBU is taking significant steps regarding the participation rules, the voting and judging rules, as well as the sponsorship and organization of the festival.
Over the past few weeks, VRT has noticed that the EBU is now taking its members’ concerns seriously and is working on the future of the Song Contest. The Flemish public broadcaster wants to remain involved in this process. For VRT, therefore, participation is not an endpoint, but a commitment to continue building, together with other public broadcasters, a Eurovision Song Contest that is credible, unifying, and future-oriented.
Frederik Delaplace (CEO of VRT] says:
The Eurovision Song Contest is taking place in a world facing war, geopolitical tensions, and societal polarization. VRT therefore understands the widely divergent opinions and emotions regarding participation in the Song Contest. Furthermore, participation is in no way an endorsement or normalization of what is happening in Gaza and the rest of the world. We do note, however, that the EBU is no longer shying away from these difficult societal and geopolitical issues. That is why VRT wants to continue supporting the search for a restoration of what the Song Contest stands for, because the exercise is not yet finished. But striving for connection also means: not running away from the debate, but staying in dialogue with one another. In this way, we believe that the Song Contest will soon be able to mean something again to all those who are suffering from war and violence today.
Belgium at Eurovision
Belgium is one of the founder members of the Eurovision Song Contest, having debuted at very first edition of our favourite television show in 1956. Belgium has won the competition once, namely in 1986 with Sandra Kim. The following year Brussels hosted the 1987 Eurovision Song Contest. Belgium has partaken 67 times in the competition.
In 2026 ESSYLA represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest with her entry ‘Dancing On The Ice‘.
