TVR, the Romanian national broadcaster, has confirmed that Romania will compete at the forthcoming 2027 Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria.
Thus Romania joins the list of countries who have confirmed their participation at the upcoming Eurovision 2027 edition in Bulgaria.
It is more than likely that TVR and Romania will determine the 2027 Romanian Eurovision entry and act via a national selection. TVR will be releasing more details regarding its Eurovision 2027 plan of action in due course.
TVR’s official press release reads:
The Board of Directors of the Romanian Television Company approved, with 11 votes in favor and one abstention, Romania’s participation in the 71st edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The decision was taken in the meeting of July 22, 2026 and concerns Romania’s participation in the competition within the budget that will be approved and allocated to the project through the SRTv Revenue and Expenditure Budget for 2027.
TVR’s decision comes in the context of Romania’s success at the 2026 edition, when Alexandra Căpitănescu, our representative, recorded one of the best results in the history of Romania’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest – 3rd place in the Grand Final, the song “Choke me” obtaining 296 points.
At the same time, the 2026 National Selection brought together 101 submitted songs, confirming the music industry’s interest in this project.
In addition, the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest generated a huge media wave in Romania. According to mediaTRUS analysis, from the beginning of the year until the day of the final, Eurovision accumulated 21,565 mentions in the Romanian media space.
Approving participation at this stage allows for the establishment of a predictable calendar for organizing the project, attracting as many composers, lyricists, producers and performers as possible, conducting a competitive National Selection and preparing the Romanian representative in the best conditions.
The Eurovision Song Contest is the most important music competition organized under the aegis of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) – the largest association of public broadcasters in Europe – and one of the most watched television events worldwide. Launched in 1956, the contest is broadcast annually worldwide, being watched by over 160 million viewers in Europe, Australia, Asia and America. The next edition of the international contest will take place in May 2027, in Bulgaria.
For TVR, participation in the competition represents a strategic project to promote Romanian music, support new artists and consolidate Romania’s image on the international stage.
Romania in Eurovision
Romania debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 and is yet to win the compeitition. The country achieved its best results in our beloved show in 2005 with Luminita Anghel, in 2010 with Paula Seling and Ovi and in 2026 with Alexandra Capitanescu when it placed 3rd in the Grand Final.
Romania has competed 24 times in the competition.In 2026 Alexandra Capitanescu represented Romania a tthe Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna with her entry ‘Choke Me‘ achieving an honourable 3rd place in the Grand Final.
