Finnish representative Linda Lampenius has received special permission from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to play her violin live during Finland’s performance at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 in Vienna. This marks a significant moment, as instruments are typically heard on pre-recorded tracks due to the complexities of live tuning in a fast-paced show. The approval came today after successful testing during rehearsals.
Linda Lampenius, who represents Finland alongside Pete Parkkonen with the song ‘Liekinheitti’, has successfully secured permission from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to perform live with her violin on the Eurovision stage in Vienna. This decision follows a request made by Lampenius back in April.
The EBU, organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest, approved the request today after rigorous practice and testing of the live playing during Finland’s rehearsals in Vienna. This is a notable exception to the contest’s long-standing rules, which typically require all instrumental parts to be pre-recorded on the backing track. The usual reasoning behind this rule is the almost impossible task of tuning instruments quickly between performances in a fast-paced live television show.
Lampenius expressed her desire for the audience to experience her playing truly live, a wish that has now been granted. The Finnish duo, Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen, had their first rehearsal of ‘Liekinheitti’ in Vienna last Saturday.
Finland is currently considered one of the early favourites for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The country will compete for a place in the Grand Final during the First Semi-Final, scheduled for next Tuesday, May 12. The Second Semi-Final will follow on May 14, with the Grand Final taking place on May 16. All shows will be broadcast on Yle’s channels and online.
