ERT, the Greek national broadcaster, has confirmed to ESCToday Greece’s preliminary participation at the forthcoming 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Israel.
Kalispera Europe, this is Athens calling! The Greek national broadcaster has applied to compete at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest and hopes to join the list of countries who will participate in Tel Aviv. It is more than likely that Greece will join the competition in Israel next year.
We expect ERT to officialy confirm its upcoming Eurovision participation in due course. The deadline for broadcasters to apply for participation concluded on 15 September and the grace period for applicant countries to withdraw their application without facing a financial penalty concludes in mid October.
ERT is yet to reveal the mechanism it will use to select the 2019 Greek Eurovision entry and act.
Greece is yet to decide if it will opt for an internal selection as has been the case in recent years or revert to a televised national final. Further details regarding the 2019 Greek Eurovision project will be disclosed in due course.
Greece in Eurovision
Greece debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 and has won the competition once in 2005 with Helena Paparizou‘s My number one.
Greece enjoyed its golden era at the Eurovision Song Contest from 2004-2013, achieving 9 top 10 placings in the Grand Final, including its 2005 victory.
In 2018 ERT selected Yianna Terzi and her entry Oniro mou to fly the Greek flag at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon. Despite an extraordinary performance the country failed to qualify to the Grand Final.
