The show has started.

The host welcomes the audience in the biggest arena ever of a Portuguese national selection.

1. Nucha Chuva

Current esctoday.com poll result: 2nd (19.3%)

The opens with a ballad performed by the 1990 Portuguese representative Nucha. The song starts off very calmly but gains power towards the end. The vocal performance is flawless and very emotional and it could even be considered a tad too dramatic at some points. Generally a strong opener for the 2010 festival. The performance also features something very Eurovision: A wind machine!

2. Ouro Arco-íris dentro de mim

Current esctoday.com poll result: 1st (32.5%)

The second song tonight is in a similar style as the 2008 Portugues entry Senhora do mar, although it is a bit faster. The vocal performance is strong and folkloristic choreography suits the song, although it mmight be a bit random. The pastel shades chosing for the background images leave somewhat of a pale impression. Nevertheless, the overall act seems to have chances to reach the final despite the death slot in the draw.

3. Claudisabel Contra tudo e todos

Current esctoday.com poll result: =8th (3.5%)

as one of the songwriters is a member of the editorial team of esctoday.com, we do not comment on the song for the sake of fairness

4. Filipa Azevedo Há dias assim

Current esctoday.com poll result: 4th (7.9%)

Filipa brings a pianist along with a piano on stage, which suits this classic ballad very well (although the oversized candle on top of it looks a bit random). Another performance that features a wind machine, but in fact, it goes well with the dynamic background images. The vocal performance is flawless and emotional and if it does not suffer from being among many ballads in a row, it could well qualify for the final.

5. Jorge Guerreiro Ai Lisboa

Current esctoday.com poll result: 10th (2.6%)

Jorge Guerreiro brings a Salsa feeling on stage, mixed with folk music. Altough his facial expressions are a bit serious and not as seductive as you might expect in a performance of a song of that style, he seems to feel at ease on stage. The song is catchy but very repetitive in the chorus.

6. Dennisa Meu mundo de sonhos

Current esctoday.com poll result: =6th (4.4%)

Number six is a nice up-tempo pop song in a style rather typical for Portuguese national finals. In fact, it could have already represented Portugal 20 years ago. The performance is a bit strange as it features a shirtless male ballet dancer and some hectic dancing. The audience seems to love it.

7. Nuno Pinto Fogo lento

Current esctoday.com poll result: 5th (6.1%)

Nuno Pinto performs a mid-tempo pop song with some minor rock influences. He tries to entertain the audience, which seems a bit forced at some points as does the overall performance. Nevertheless, it is once again shown that you usually don't have to worry about the quality of the vocal performances when watching the Portuguese national selections. The song gets rather monotonous in the second half but might still make it to the final.

8. Filipa Galvão Telles O amor não sabe

Current esctoday.com poll result: 11th (0.9%)

The eighth song tonight is a very minimalistic tune that creates a very nostalgic feeling on stage. A very unusual effort, also thanks to the classical dance performance and the saxophone. It is hard to believe that this one would do well in Oslo but it might be popular among those who want Portugal to choose something unusual.

9. The AgencyÉ assim que as coisas são

Current esctoday.com poll result: =6th (4.4%)

Another ballad. The lead vocalist delivers a very emotional performance but the song itself might lack some highlight. The Blues Brothers outfits are interesting but it is unsure how they are supposed to reflect the song. The audience still seems to love this song.

10. Gonçalo Madruga Cores de um mundo

Current esctoday.com poll result: 12th (0%)

Yes, another ballad is coming up. The singer seems a bit insecure, especially at the beginning, which also can be heard. The performance is very static with the singer sitting on a stool (although he does stand up during the second half – but that was expected). The song is rather lenghty and does not stand out among the ballads tonight. Probably not among the most likely qualifiers tonight.

11. Evelyne FilipeA tua voz

Current esctoday.com poll result: =8th (3.5%)

Gimmick time! Evelyne brings a room divider on stage and she hides behind it at the beginning. The outfits of both herself and her backing performers are almost all in white, one of THE classic Eurovision colours. The ballad is among the stronger ones tonight, although the very subtle blues/rock feeling that is created by the arrangement might not be suitable for the Eurovision Song Contest. Nevertheless, a likely qualifier tonight.

12. Vanessa Alvorada

Current esctoday.com poll result: 3rd (14.9%)

To conclude and sum up tonight's show, Vanessa brings all classc elements of a ballad on stage: White outfits, a strings quartet, a wind machine and a very dramatic vocal performance that could be considered "classic Eurovision". This one is for those who like their ESC entries classic and it is for sure that there are plenty of them out there. The reaction by the audience is enthusiastic.
