Sergey Lazarev shot to fame when he won the 2002 New Wave Song Festival as part of Smash!!! along Vlad Topalov. He has come a long way since his early days. Today Sergey is a household name both in Russia and in the neighbouring countries.
The Russian superstar represented Russia at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm achieving an honorable 3rd place in the Grand Final, with his entry You are the only one.
The 2016 New Wave Song Festival was held in Sochi from 03-09 September. A grand line up of Russian and international celebrities graced the ocassion, including many former Eurovision acts both from Russia and neighbouring countries: Philip Kirkorov (Russia 1994), Ani Lorak (Ukraine 2008), Alyona Lanskaya (Belarus 2013), Polina Gagarina (Russia 2015) and Alexey Vorobyov (Russia 2011). World famous act Ricky Martin shook Sochi with his Latin dancing and beats.
Internationally acclaimed Greek composer Dimitris Kontopoulos (Russia 2014, 2016- Greece 2009- Ukraine 2008- Azerbaijan 2013) was invited to grace the ocassasion as a member of the jury.
