Cyprus: Marlain Angelidou enters with an edgy song

Marlain Angelidou returns to the Eurovision race once more with Mr Do right One night stand, a hard rock song with edgy lyrics. Why did she choose the particular song for the Cypriot preselection and what is it about? Marlain represented Cyprus once more in 1999 and she also speaks about her experience back then.

"Mr Do right – One night stand is not about a specific situation or about a one night stand, it is about how society is these days, how we are cut off from our emotions, and how we are very carnal in the way we relate to each other instead of really feeling each other, feeling how emotional we are inside." she tells us. Marlain chose the particular song as she feels it can stand out and make Europe notice Cyprus.

Marlain will not be alone on the Cypriot final stage on 7th February. She will be accompanied by a newly formed female rock band, the Diesel sisters. All of the members of the band have had some background in theater and the music scene one of them being Marlain's step sister Fay Vokou, a presenter on Greek Alter TV morning program.

Straightforward and honest, Marlain Angelidou wants to do Eurovision but on her own terms. She is very well aware that her choices of songs are unconventional and ‘'non Eurovision'' but she is not willing to compromise: "It's who I am, I wouldn't want to change that, I wouldn't want to go to Eurovision not being myself. Because then I can't support what I do on stage!" she says. If there is one thing Marlain does not appreciate about the Eurovision Song Contest, that would be the fact that most songs are written specifically for it "I wish people were more individual in their choices", she admits. And one of the things she appreciates the most is that millions of people all over Europe get together on these three nights to celebrate music and support each other's entries.

Ten years ago, Marlain represented Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest with Tha'nai erotas, placing low in the scoreboard, although she had been leading all the pre contest polls. "Have you gotten over that?" we wanted to know. How did the artist feel back then under the tremendous pressure, how did she deal with the disappointment? "I was really young and I didn't know much about anything really", she laughs, "it was really, really hard because I felt this great amount of pressure, you know, you have to represent a whole country, and everyone looking at me and thinking you have to do really well. And as a person I don't deal very well with having to do well or having to prove myself. So I took it very hard…." she confesses. Thinking back now she concludes that Eurovision was an absolutely great life experience for her.

It may have been hard to be "everyone's idol" and then suddenly "at the bottom of the pit", but now things are different as Marlain feels she is standing on her own two feet and knows who she is and what she wants out of her life and art :" I want to go out there and have fun, I want to go and sing the best that I can, with the best presentation I can come up with and give them a bit of an edge!" she giggles.

Thanks to Johnny Logan and Hold me now I fell in love with the Eurovision Song Contest, a love that's been going strong ever since with undiminished passion. My first memories date back to 1977 and the lyrics of Rock bottom, Dschinghis Khan and A ba ni bi are still engraved in my brain.

I joined esctoday.com in 2006 as a junior editor after being invited by Barry Viniker, I soon became Senior Editor and during the 2007 contest in Helsinki I was appointed Head of Communications. Today I hold the post of Head of Human Resources and I am proud to be working with the best editorial team in the world.
