United Kingdom: five acts to the next round

The first elimination show in the United Kingdom's selection for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest was held tonight. Six acts each performed an international hit and the televoters sent the top four directly to the next round. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber than decided who of the bottom two contestants was eliminated from the show. You can see the performances and results announcement below.

Those were the top four entrants as decided by the televoters:

  • Jade
  • Mark
  • Emperors of Soul
  • The Twins

From the remaining two acts, Andrew LLoyd Webber decided that Charlotte remains in the competition while Damien was eliminated.

During the show it was also announced that Diane Warren will write the lyrics of the UK entry. The US American composer has written such international hit songs as If I could turn back time (Cher), Because you loved me (Céline Dion), I don't want to miss a thing (Aerosmith), How do I live and Can't fight the moonlight (LeAnnRimes) and There you'll be (Faith Hill). She has also worked with 2008 Eurovision Song Contest winner Dima Bilan.

The United Kingdom was represented in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest by Andy Abraham, who finished equal 23rd and hence last with Even if. Nevertheless, the country is directly qualified for the final of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest because of the 'big4' rule.
