The 2016 Sanremo Song Festival was held at the Ariston Theatre in Sanremo from the 9-13 February. The band Stadio were declared the winners of the Italian musical extravaganza. They declined the invitation to represent Italy at the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Hence the runner up Francesca Michielin has been given the chance to go to Eurovision.
Francesca competed in Sanremo 2016 with her entry Nessun grado di separazione. The song that Francesca will sing in Stockholm is yet to be confirmed. It is likely that she might opt for her Sanremo entry.
The 2016 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to be held on 10, 12 and 14 May at the Globen Arena in Stockholm.
Italy is one of the founder members of the Eurovision Song Contest, having debuted in the very first contest in 1956. The country has won the competition twice in 1964 with Gigliola Cinquetti and in 1990 with Toto Cotugno.
