Tonight, Malta Song for Europe 2009, the Maltese national final for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow, was held. The 20 acts that had qualified through the eight semi finals presented their songs and eventually televoting chose the winner after a jury had had its say. Chiara will represent the country for the third time already with the song What if we.

The winning song was chosen in two rounds of voting. In the first round, the jury selected the following three songs to move forward to the 'super final'. The televoters then decided alone that Chiara will represent Malta in Moscow. The complete to three were as follows:

  1. ChiaraWhat if we
  2. QBefore you walk away
  3. Eleanor CassarSomeday

This is the third time she will take part in the competition following 1998, when she finished third with The one that I love and 2005, when she finished second with her own composition Angel. Her 2009 entry is composed by Marc Paelinck, who wrote the Belgian entries in 2002 (Sister by Sergio and the Ladies, 13th) and 2004 (1 life by Xandee, 22nd). The lyrics of What if we are written by Gregory Bilsen.
