Urban Trad for Belgium to Eurovision Song Contest

Breaking news at the Belgian Eurovision website eurosong.be! Suddenly it appeared that the band Urban Trad will represent Belgium at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Riga on behalf of the Wallonian broadcaster RTBF. Their song for the contest is Sanomi, a song particulairy based on a fake language.

Last year, it was the turn of the Flemish broadcaster VRT to select the Belgian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, which means that this year the Wallonian broadcaster RTBF is responsible for all Eurovision Song Contest related matters. Because of the disappointing result of Nathalie Sorce in 2000, when the RTBF chose its Eurovision entry with a national selection, they decided to keep it internally this year. It's well known too that RTBF is not a very rich broadcaster.

The band Urban Trad particulairy makes Celtic music. Lead artist Yves Barbieux, a 31-year old Wallonian artist, plays several Celtic instruments.

Pierre Meyer, head of entertainment of RTBF, said to eurosong.be that they want to go for “professionalism (…) and Urban Trad is a good choise because folk music is getting more and more popular in Europe”.
