40 countries will be taking part in the 60th Eurovision Song Contest which will be held in Vienna on 19, 21 and 23 May. The next country to be introduced is Italy. Singing for Italy this year is Il Volo.

Il Volo is a boyband from Italy, singing in the pop-opera style. The group consists of three members: Piero Barone (1993), Ignazio Boschetto (1994) and Gianluca Ginoble (1995).

The guys met in 2009, when all three of them competed separately in the Italian TV-show Ti Lascio Una Canzone. During the show, they performed the song O sole mio together. Although the competition eventually was won by Gianluca Ginoble with a cover of Andrea Bocelli’s Il mare calmo della sera, their joint performance was so beloved that they decided to continue as a group.

Initially performing under such names as Il Trio, Tre Tenori and The Tryo, the band finally settled for the name Il Volo (“The Flight”) in the fall of 2010. Their self-titled debut-album also appeared in 2010, and from there on the group became increasingly popular, nationally as well as abroad. In 2011 the Spanish version of their debut-album was nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards.

In 2015 Il Volo competed in Italy’s prestigious San Remo Music Festival, eventually winning the contest with the song Grande amore, and additionally earning the right the represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, Austria. Grande amore, which originally is almost four minutes in length, has been adapted to fit within the three-minute rule for songs competing in the Eurovision Song Contest.
