The Swedish media has reacted with their strongest coverage of Sweden's Eurovision Song Contest selection show, Melodifestivalen. The announcement of the artists not only made the front pages of tabloid papers, Aftonbladet and Expressen, but two broadsheet papers, Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter also increased their coverage.
SVT told esctoday.com that they are pleased with the reaction from the press and the coverage given to the artists that will participate in 2008. With two days of national headline news exposure, the competition remains as strong as ever in Sweden and continues to grip the public imagination.
Both Aftonbladet and Expressen provided more than 8 pages of coverage on Monday and Tuesday of this week, whilst Sweden's best selling newspapers, Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyhete had double page spreads on the upcoming Melodifestivalen 2008 and the competing artists. Both SVT's own news programming and that of commercial channels covered the announcement of the competing artists.
All this despite Sweden achieving a highly disappointing result at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki this year. The Ark won a landslide victory at Melodifestivalen 2007 topping both the jury and public televote polls, however viewers in Europe were not so supportive. Sweden only received votes from Nordic countries, the United Kingdom televote and the Andorran back-up jury.
Consistently one of the most impressive television shows of the year in Sweden, with steady viewing figures and international acclaim from other broadcasters and Eurovision Song Contest fans (winning the 2006 National final of the year award on esctoday.com by a landslide) the show is set for another successful year in 2008.
