On Saturday evening María from Iceland won their national final, Söngvakeppnin, with the song Unbroken.

She was the joint writer of the song together with the StopWaitGo trio so had another reason to celebrate.

The 21 year old, María Ólafsdóttir, was overjoyed with the result and told visir.is  I’m still realizing what has happened.  María was being interviewed by Kolbeinn Tumi Daðason. Whichever song had won her co-authors were happy as they also penned , Once again sung by Fridrik Dór.

Kolbeinn’s article continues One of the things that caught people’s attention was María’s answer to the question – what was her favorite band? The answer she gave was, Birgitta Haukdal who represented Iceland at Eurovision in 2003 with Open your heart and the band Írafár, which Birgitta is a member of.

The Icelandic victor said I used to be a huge fan of Írafár and Birgitta Haukdal. She was my idol so it was the first thing I thought of.

The 21 year old was told that many viewers believed there are similarities between herself and Birgitta. She laughs and says she’s heard that many times before. She was asked about her nerves when she takes to the stage in Vienna: I’ll just focus on singing to the camera and imagine I’m alone in my room singing.
