Sandie Shaw, first British winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, is recovering after a cosmetic operation on her trademark feet.
Shaw, one of the UK's most recognisable pop singers of the 1960s, won the 1967 contest in Vienna with the Eurovision classic Puppet on a String. She sang in her trademark barefoot style, baring her toes for the whole world to see. However, she confesses the irony of that situation on her website, explaining that "I have always wanted beautiful feet. My husband says that, when I was being created, the design team did a great job until they got down to my ankles."
Grand unveilling
The bandages have now been removed following the operation in July, although the singer has some months of recovery to go until she can show off her new feet. She will be immobilised until October, after which there will be "a grand unveiling of the remodelled tootsies" according to the UK star. The road to recovery is not without its funny moments, however, as she jokes about the "condom-like rubber leg tubes to shower in" and the "huge geisha-style shoes" she was given to wear post-op.
Shaw, who retrained as a psychotherapist in the 1990s, will perhaps feel more proud at the title of her autobiography The World at My Feet now!
