Last year, Flying the Flag helped to raise more than £1,100 in aid of blood cancer charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research by hosting an online raffle. Eurovision fans had the opportunity of winning a flag which featured Minipop Icons of the 5 UK Eurovision winners along with the signatures from the artists. This year, Flying the Flag is back with a mission to raise even more money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research; a charity very close to their hearts.

Flying the Flag 2014

This year’s flag, designed by illustrator Ben Morris, features the ABBA Minipop Icons which depicts the 4 members of the band – Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Anderssons and Anna-Frid Lyngstad. The flag also features the Minipop version of the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 host Katie Boyle along with the 1974 Swedish conductor Sven-Olof Walldoff dressed in his iconic Eurovision outfit.

Whilst the flag was designed as a commemorative flag to mark 40 years since ABBA’s Eurovision win, the flag itself was created for a very important reason; to raise money to help beat blood cancer. Following Eurovision fan Karen Roberts’ diagnosis with acute myeloid leukaemia back in 2009, Karen and her husband Dale were inspired to set up Flying the Flag – a fundraising project which is set up to help raise money in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Talking about Flying the Flag and the charity, Karen says:

I know without the dedicated work by Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, it is unlikely that I would be here today. I hope people will enter this raffle knowing that, as well as being in with a chance of winning such a unique Eurovision item, your contribution will help all those suffering from this awful disease and will help Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research in their mission to beat blood cancer.

Regarding the Flying the Flag project, Catriona Tait, Regional Fundraising Manager (North) for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research’s stated:

Flying the Flag’s special ABBA project is a valued support of our work to beat blood cancer and provides a fantastic opportunity for fans of ABBA and Eurovision to win this unique flag signed by all 4 members of the group. Best wishes to all those entering the raffle and many thanks to Flying the Flag and Karen for their continued fundraising and support.

Like last year’s flag, fans will be able to win this unique piece of memorabilia by entering the online raffle via the Flying the Flag JustGiving page. For every 5€ (£5) you donate, you will receive one entry towards the online raffle. On the 22 May, the raffle draw will take place during the W12P live show which takes place at 21:00 CET (20:00 GMT). You can read more about the show via the W12P website.
