Gunars Kalnins and Jolanda Suvorova were runner-up at the first Eirodziesma 2007 semi-final receiving 5840 televotes for their song What a love can do to me. esctoday.com has talked to Gunars about his musical preferences, experiences and things that could sweep him off his feet.
Despite his young age (mid twenties), Gunars Kalnins has been on the stage for more than 20 years. He started his musical career as a singer in kids’ vocal band Dzeguzite (The little cuckoo), later on becoming a member of Riga Dome Boys Choire.
Kalnins’ first album containing mostly his own songs was released in 1999. Since then, Gunars’ creativity has developed – he had composed the soundtrack to a documentary “Rīga, Mana Rīga” (Riga, My Riga) and to a cartoon “Skapis” (Wardrobe). Gunars is the founder and conductor of gospel choir “GG Choir” as well as musical producer of “Prego” (Eirodziesma 2006).
His first Eirodziesma appearance was in 2001 followed by taking part in Latvian finals in 2002 and 2005. After the poor results in 2005, Gunars announced that he would not ever take part in the event again, but tables have turned and he has joined with Jolanda Suvorova this year reaching the final.
Jolanda Suvorova is also an experienced stage artist. She is energetic, colourful and creative. Many artists turn to her when an advice regarding the stage outfits and performances are needed. She has been performing for 35 years not only in Latvia, but in Russia, Sweden and Germany as well.
