Austria has competed in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 1957 and was one of the few countries that achieved a last place as a debutant (Bob Martin – Wohin, kleines Pony?). The only victory came in 1966: Udo Jürgens, a comercially very succesful singer in the German speaking countries, won with Merci chérie. The last top 5 placing so far was achieved in 1989 by Thomas Forstner with the song Nur ein Lied. In 2005, Global.Kryner didn't make it to the final which led ORF to the decision not to take part in Athens. As a returning country, they will have to enter the semi final.
