When an unknown Lena Philipsson took the Melodifestival stage in back 1986 no one knew she would had her own stamp in 1991, and is now a leading figure both as a recording artist and as the star of many shows on stage and tv, celebrates her first twenty years in business with a compilation album of her greatest hits.
Lena Philipsson had a flying start to her career in Melodifestival 1986 when she was the runner up with Kärleken är evig. Her debut album followed and and two more Melodifestivalens in a row. In 1987 she competed with Dansa i neon (5th) and in 1988 with Om igen (2nd). By then she had been nicknamed “The sexiest sewing machine in Sweden” and known for her original taste in cloathing she sewed herself. She also tried a couple of times as a composer (Pernilla Wahlgren’s Tvillingsjäl in 1990 and Arvingarna’s Det svär jag på in 1999).
Her recording career got into trouble in the mid 1990’s after three successful schlager pop albums that were followed by the smash hit album My name (1989), very successful secret agent 006 incarnation inspired Woman’s got to do what woman’s got to do (1991) and then her near flop dance album Fantasy (1993) recorded in London. She took a step back with a Swedish album that she simply named Lena Philipsson (1995) and then released a jazzy soul pop album Bästa vänner (1997).
Always a great live artist Lena concentrated more on her shows and tours after taking it easy for some years with her two kids and returned on stage big time in 2001, when her show started in Hamburger Börs in Stockholm, then moved on to Rondo in Gothenburg and later travelled across Sweden to full houses for two years. She also co-hosted Melodifestival 2000 and 2003.
Over the years many compilation albums had been released and people started wondering if she would never release any new material. Lena returned to Melodifestival 2004 as wild card and finally won. Her by now legendary play with microphone stand in her song Det gör ont took her to Istanbul where she performed the song in English (It hurts) and gained 6th place. Her album, the first in nearly seven years, sold like bread and a string of hits followed. The Lenamania continued with her 2005 album. She did a TV special, toured all over, presented Melodifestival 2006 and her one woman show was a success.
In 2007 she has a new show Lena+Orup with a premier on 26th January in Stockholm’s Chinateatern coming up, TV4 will broadcast a special Lena Philipsson DeLuxe next Saturday and her new compilation is out tomorrow. A DVD will follow later this year. Lena is also involved in Melodifestival 2007 production. And it is still January.
