Daz Sampson seeks triumph after tragedy

With Teenage life finishing near the bottom of the rankings for 2006, many Daz Sampson fans were disappointed. But Daz kept to himself a horrible secret while in Athens, which he's only recently spoken about publicly. In an interview with the Southport Express, he discusses what happened in in 2006 and what he has planned for 2007.

When Daz Sampson mounted the stage in Athens earlier this year, few knew what had happened the week before he left for Athens: Daz had found his father dead:

“I didn’t want people to feel sympathy for me, and equally I didn’t want to tell people only for them to turn round and accuse me of exploiting dad’s death for extra votes. When I went on stage in the final I had to put that act on because I knew deep down that dad would have wanted me to go ahead"

As one might expect, Daz has made time with family a priority for this Christmas time. He will spend the hoiidays with his mum, brothers, and daughter before jetting off to Malta to perform on New Year's Eve with other ESC veterans.

And Daz is already preparing to take another crack at representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest–in 2007! He has written a "power ballad" to be sung by Carol Decker (lead vocalist of T'Pau), which they will submit to the BBC once submissions can be made for 2007. “I feel there’s unfinished business at the contest and there are some wrongs which need to be put right,” explained Daz. The song, entitled Goodbye, was written for Daz's Dad.

Despite finishing 19th in the final of the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest with Teenage life, the UK is automatically qualified for next year's final because of its "Big 4" status.
